David currently is the co-founder of Adumu Safaris and Adumu Impact – both based out of California. Adumu Safaris is a socially responsible, social impact safari tour company with a particular focus on Maasai empowerment. All profits go to Adumu Impact, which is a charitable organization established to restore land, rights, culture, and economic self-determination to the Indigenous Maasai and other host communities through equitable ecotourism, regional tourism reform, and community wildlife conservation.

Q&A with David:

How did your program at CSU help you to get to where you are today?

The program has bolstered my industry knowledge and enhanced my network of social entrepreneurs in sustainable tourism and adventure travel. It has given me a broad understanding of how to operate Adumu Safaris, a socially responsible safari tour company and social enterprise. It has been my dream to be able to empower the Maasai, my tribe in Tanzania, through socially responsible and community-accountable ecotourism opportunities, and my experience at CSU launched me to be able to finally accomplish this with Adumu Safaris. We are empowering local people and conserving wildlife, all while providing transformative learning journeys to travelers!

What skills and knowledge from your graduate program are you using in your current position?

I regularly use the leadership skills, entrepreneurship, finance, and knowledge of sustainable tourism that I received through the program. At Adumu Safaris, our itineraries include community-led experiences that go much deeper than a day visit. We try to build a longer more immersive experience into our itinerary, which we customise. Our clients are always pleasantly surprised, and they say one of the highlights–if not the highlight of the trip–was spending time with the Maasai and learning about our traditional medicine, storytelling, spear-throwing, and enjoying a whole series of authentic cultural experiences with the Maasai and other local communities in the region that forge lasting relationships.
