Alex is currently completing his Master’s in Watershed Science at Colorado State University (expected graduation term – Fall 2023) and is a Drone Pilot with the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) unit at Westwood Professional Services where he collects remote sensing data for green energy development.

What led you to a natural resources education/career?

The existential threat facing our planet and being outdoors instead of in a cubicle.

What do you identify as your 'big break?' Did CSU have anything to do with it?

CSU gave me my big break. After taking the ‘Remote Sensing for Geoscientists’ course I was invited by Dr. Dan McGrath to assist with drone and other measurements on a collaborative NASA project in the Poudre Canyon measuring snow.

What are you up to now in your job? Any noteworthy projects to discuss? (or any recently completed etc.)?

I am working for an engineering firm in Denver that specializes in wind and solar energy development. I work on the road a lot. I just recently completed flying a three thousand acre geophysical exploration in Kentucky for a future solar farm - No crashes!

Can you reflect on your time and experiences at CSU and how it benefited you?

CSU was integral to my development, both professionally and as a community member. The CSU students I encountered were incredibly driven and motivated to justice and conservation. The faculty were inspirational and encouraging. I am fortunate to be able to call many from both groups friends to this day.

How did CSU set you up for success in your career field?

CSU exposed me to many different interests I had while enrolled. When I was interested in snow (I still am!), Dr. Steven Fassnacht helped me secure an internship with the Colorado Snow Survey at the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Later as I developed an interest in remote sensing work, many courses, faculty, and opportunities were available through CSU.

What advice do you have for current students or recent grads?

Explore your interests, take courses outside of your major track, knock on doors and develop relationships. Above all - stay curious!
