The Department of Geosciences is happy to help identify rock specimen for the general public. The procedure for identification is below.
-
- Please take a photo of your rock specimen. Just one or two photos are fine.
- It is helpful to have a ruler or some other item next to it so we can see the size.
- Please email the photos to: [email protected].
- Please include where the specimen was found, its approximate weight, and if it is magnetic.
- When received, we will forward your email to one of our faculty members for feedback.
- They will contact you directly with their opinion or if they would like to see it in-person.
Please note:
- We cannot certify rocks or meteorites, but we can give you our educated opinion on the contents of the specimen.
- Please, only one or two specimens, we cannot give feedback on collections of rocks.
- Please do not bring the specimen to our office. Due to a wide variety of faculty schedules, we cannot guarantee that we have someone available at any given time. Please email first.
