CSU Geosciences Rock/Meteorite Identification

The Department of Geosciences is happy to help identify rock specimen for the general public. The procedure for identification is below.

    1. Please take a photo of your rock specimen. Just one or two photos are fine.
    2. It is helpful to have a ruler or some other item next to it so we can see the size.
    3. Please email the photos to: [email protected].
    4. Please include where the specimen was found, its approximate weight, and if it is magnetic.
    5. When received, we will forward your email to one of our faculty members for feedback.
    6. They will contact you directly with their opinion or if they would like to see it in-person.

Please note:

  • We cannot certify rocks or meteorites, but we can give you our educated opinion on the contents of the specimen.
  • Please, only one or two specimens, we cannot give feedback on collections of rocks.
  • Please do not bring the specimen to our office. Due to a wide variety of faculty schedules, we cannot guarantee that we have someone available at any given time. Please email first.
