Community Outreach Access Recruitment Committee (COAR)
Bridging geosciences, community, access and opportunity

COAR'S Vision

The Department of Geosciences is committed as a community to improving and enhancing an inclusive environment for all students, faculty, scientists, and staff. Fostering a community where everyone feels valued and respected is fundamental to our mission to achieve excellence in teaching, research, service, and outreach. We believe that the geosciences are stronger when they embrace individuals with varied backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.

COAR Committee

The Department of Geosciences Community OAR (COAR) Committee supports and coordinates department outreach, access, and recruitment activities. The Committee is composed of students, faculty and staff working to improve representation in the geosciences, and build a culture of inclusion in our department and in our interactions with the greater Geoscience community. The Committee meets monthly during the academic year, and we encourage all to participate.

Community

Our goal is to maintain a community where every member is welcomed, respected, and supported. We carry this out through clear commitments to honesty, responsibility, and fairness. We encourage open dialogue, value each person’s contributions, and uphold practices that treat everyone with dignity. We also strive to serve both one another and the broader community by sharing our time, talents, and resources.

Outreach

We strive to connect with external communities and partners to build relationships, collaborate on initiatives, and share information about our work. These efforts help strengthen partnerships, increase awareness, and ensure our programs have a meaningful impact beyond our Department.

Access

Access means ensuring that all individuals can easily find, understand, and use our programs, services, and resources. We focus on removing barriers, providing clear information, and creating opportunities for everyone. This includes improving the effectiveness of curriculum, educational programs, and research by incorporating varied perspectives and experiences.

Recruitment

We support the recruitment, retention, and advancement of faculty, staff, and students, while addressing any challenges to ensure everyone has the chance to succeed.
