E-CAMP

Update on Summer E-CAMP (posted 4/20/20)

We hope this note finds you and your family healthy and adjusted to the changes and sacrifices you’ve had to make recently.

We know you are likely wanting updates about our plans for summer E-CAMP considering COVID-19. We hope to have an answer for you by the end of April. As an entity of CSU, we are looking to the university for directives on what we will be allowed to do over the course of the summer. Beyond that, we have many other factors to consider such as the health and safety of staff and campers and the feasibility of potentially hiring staff for only part of the summer season.

You may need to solidify your plans for the summer, or you may want to cancel your E-CAMP registration now in the interest of caution. We understand. If you wish to cancel your registration, please email us at elc@csuelc.org with your child(ren)’s name(s). Refunds are done manually, so please be patient. You will receive notification when your refund has been processed.

We are extending our cancellation and payment deadline to June 1. Cancellations received prior to June 1 will receive a full refund of the camp fee. Full payment for summer E-CAMP will be due June 1. We hope these measures will give you the flexibility to make the best decisions for your family.

Rest assured, if we decide to cancel summer E-CAMP due to COVID-19, you will receive a full refund of your camp fee, regardless of when that decision is made.

If you are willing and able to wait it out, we will be back in touch by the end of April.

In the meantime, if you haven’t already, check out our Facebook page (Colorado State University Environmental Learning Center) for daily nature challenges meant to help you and your family get outdoors.

All the best,

Nicole and Kristen

E-CAMP is our program for students in grades 6-8! We go on outdoor adventures and explore nature; it’s all about learning and hanging out with friends and peers. E-CAMP runs in the summer, fall and spring; each section is a little different, scroll down for a full description of each program. Each session focuses on positive experiences in nature, building community and learning about the natural world around us.

Has your child aged out of E-CAMP? Check out our Counselor-in-Training summer program for youth ages 13-17 years old!

Spring 2020

This series of programs is offered on Poudre School District school-out days. In the spring, students will learn about ecological restoration, plan and tackle their very own restoration project on the ELC property. Students will explore nature and work together to identify an ecological issue they want to take on. In the process, students will dive into local environmental issues and develop new skills while spending time outside with their friends. Participants can register for each date individually; participation in all three is strongly encouraged so that students can see the project through from beginning to end.

For all dates, be prepared to spend the entire day outside. In case of very cold weather, we will reserve an indoor space on the CSU main campus to warm up for part of the day. Students should plan for icy/snowy/muddy trail conditions and bring multiple layers of clothes for changing weather.

Registration and Cost

Each program is $25 per child. Online registration for Spring 2020 E-CAMP will open at 5AM on Wednesday, January 15. When you register, you will have the option to pay online, mail us a check or bring payment on the day of the program. Payment is due in full on the day of the program.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

Cancellations must be made in writing and sent to elc@csuelc.org. Cancellations received more than two weeks prior to the program date will receive a full refund. Schedule

Friday, September 20: Birds

8:30am-3:30pm

A guest presenter from CSU will show us how to catch birds using a mist net and we’ll get an up close look at some of the birds that call the ELC home. Using our new knowledge, we’ll explore the 212-acre property and record all the birds we can find.

Friday, October 11: Night Hike

6:30-10:00pm

Exploring the ELC trails at night, we’ll learn about owls, bats and other nocturnal animals. And, of course, we’ll share campfire songs and roast s’mores. Note: participants should plan to eat dinner prior to this program. No food other than s’mores will be provided.

Friday, October 18: Invertebrates

8:30am-3:30pm

These little critters can teach us a lot about the world around us. We’ll look for insects, arachnids and arthropods at the ELC and explore how they fit into our unique ecosystems.

Monday, November 11: Mammals

8:30am-3:30pm

We’ll take a field trip to learn about the mammals of Colorado. The site of our field trip is still TBD, but we’ll learn about some of the tools that wildlife biologists use to track and study mammals.

Summer 2020

July 27-31, 8:30am-4:30pm

Ages: open to students entering 6th-8th grade in fall 2020

Note: Summer E-CAMP is now full. Please email us at elc@csuelc.org to be added to the wait list.

This camp aims to connect youth entering grades 6-8 to the natural world through learner-led inquiry, hands-on, active exploration all while having fun in a community of peers.

This is the perfect camp for students who are interested in wildlife, the environment, and want to take action to protect and restore the natural areas they love. We will learn about wildlife by recording our wildlife observations both at the ELC and at the CSU Mountain Campus during our overnight visit. Then, we will dive deeper into our study of ecosystems by exploring what keeps the environment healthy and how interactions between all living things helps our natural areas thrive. Finally, we will practice being good stewards of the ELC by taking action in a hands-on ecological restoration project with Wildlands Restoration Volunteers.

Registration and Cost

Cost for this week of camp is $115 per child for ELC members; $125 per child for non-members.

You will have the option either to pay for Summer E-CAMP online with a credit card at the time of registration, or to mail us a check after registering. Payment for Summer E-CAMP is due in full by June 1. If payment is not received by June 1, you will forgo your spot in the camp(s).

Cancellation and Refund Policy

Cancellations made prior to June 1 will be refunded at 100%. After June 1 and up to two weeks prior to the first day of camp, a 50% refund will be given. After two weeks prior, no refunds will be given. Cancellations must be made in writing and emailed to elc@csuelc.org.

Location

Drop off and pick up for each day of camp will take place at our East Drake site.

We will travel to the CSU Mountain Campus on Wednesday and return on Thursday. This overnight trip will include a day hike, wildlife ID, and evening campfire activities.
