Our Graduate Degrees

Professional Science Master’s (PSM) – ESS

The Professional Science Master’s is an intensive, course-based graduate degree that equips students with the advanced scientific knowledge, on-the-job experience, and technical and analytical skills – like coding, modeling, and sustainable ecosystem management – to grow lucrative careers in sustainability.

Instead of a research thesis, students complete a professional 400-hour internship so they can build their resume and professional networks while earning their degree.

Accelerated Master’s Program (AMP) – ESS

The Accelerated Master’s Program (AMP) in Ecosystem Science and Sustainability is a unique, fast-track degree pathway that allows ambitious undergraduates in eligible CSU degree programs to start earning a Professional Science Master’s while still enrolled as an undergrad.

Designed to optimize time and financial resources, AMP students can complete the PSM in as little as 2 semesters of graduate study after completing their bachelor’s. AMP students typically spend less time in school, pay less tuition, and get to work sooner.

Master’s (MS) and Doctorate (PhD) – Ecosystem Sustainability

Our research degrees in Ecosystem Science are designed specifically for students who want advanced research training. MS and PhD students acquire an expert understanding of complex ecosystem functioning and the skills to conduct integrated assessments using systems approaches, conceptual, mathematical, geospatial, and statistical models.

Research degree students must find an ESS faculty advisor to work with and complete a rigorous research project of their own, with a written thesis under the direction of their advisor and a committee.

Master’s (MS) and Doctorate (PhD) – Watershed Science

Our two higher-level research degrees in Watershed Science are designed specifically for students who want advanced research training. MS and PhD students acquire an expert understanding of the physical, chemical, and biological factors that affect the quantity, quality, and flux of water. They conduct research throughout Western waters, nationally, and internationally.

Research degree students must find an ESS faculty advisor to work with and complete a rigorous research project of their own, with a written thesis under the direction of their advisor and a committee.

Why Study Ecosystem Science and Sustainability?

Our program blends deep scientific expertise in ecosystem ecology with real-world application. Students explore how physical, ecological, and societal systems interact—learning how to collaborate across disciplines and with stakeholders in government, industry, and nonprofits.

Our students graduate with:

  • In-depth knowledge of ecosystem science and sustainability
  • Skills in data analysis, modeling, and collaborative research
  • Experience working on interdisciplinary teams and engaging with decision-makers
  • Tools for systems thinking, critical analysis, and solution development at local to global scales

A Focus on Solutions

This program emphasizes applied learning and practical impact. You’ll engage directly with challenges related to water, food, energy, greenhouse gas management, land use change, and sustainable urban development. Through CSU’s renowned Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory and global network of partners, you’ll gain hands-on experience through research and community-based projects in Colorado and around the world.

Connected Locally, Relevant Globally

Students benefit from strong ties to local governments (Fort Collins, Boulder, Denver), conservation nonprofits, and community groups across Colorado’s Front Range. At the same time, our reach is global—with active research in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
