Shape the Future of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology
The Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology (FWCB) is a hub for world-class graduate training. We prepare the next generation of scientists and conservation leaders through rigorous research and hands-on field experience.
We offer the following research-based graduate degrees:
- Master of Science (M.S.) – Plan A (Thesis) and Plan B (Professional Paper)
- Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
Admission to these programs is highly competitive, and applicants are considered on an individual basis. As part of the application process, prospective students must identify a faculty member with well-aligned research interests and available funding to advise and support their graduate studies.
Admission Criteria
- GPA: A cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) is required.
- GRE: GRE scores are not required for admission.
- Degree Background: Applicants must hold a degree in physical, chemical, or biological sciences.
- Note for non-science majors: If your degree is in a field such as liberal arts, business, or education, you are generally not eligible without first completing significant foundational coursework in math and science or a second bachelor’s degree.
- Ph.D. Applicants: Generally, you must hold a master’s degree before applying to our Ph.D. program.
How to Apply: A Step-by-Step Guide

FAQs
Is there an application deadline for the M.S. or Ph.D. program?
No. We accept students on a rolling basis throughout the year. Timing depends entirely on when faculty secure grants and when research projects begin.
How does funding work?
We are committed to funding our graduate students in the M.S. and Ph.D. programs. Faculty secure funding through grants (NSF, USDA, other agencies, private industry, etc.) before accepting a student. This covers tuition and provides a stipend, allowing you to focus on your research rather than outside employment.
Can international students apply?
Yes! We welcome international applicants. Please note that financial support and visa requirements vary; visit the International Programs Office for specific details.
I am a working professional looking for a non-thesis degree. Is this the right program?
If you are interested in a coursework-only professional degree that does not require a faculty advisor or research thesis, you should explore our Online Master’s of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology. That program has a separate application process and different deadlines.
Are there interdisciplinary options?
Yes. Students interested in broader ecological studies outside of the specific FWCB track may also consider applying to CSU’s Graduate Degree Program in Ecology.
