About Sumant

I am a PhD candidate working with Dr. Dennis Harry's Antarctica research group, within the Geoscience Department of Warner College of Natural Resources. My primary research interest is in Tectonics. I am trying to identify volcanic loading events in seismic/stratigraphic records of the Ross Island flexural basin, Western Antarctica. Such identifications, on correlation with the drill holes in this region will provide a conclusive evidence of how tectonics and volcanic loading changed the Paleo-climatic indicators and hence, our interpretations of past climate. My research will also provide an estimate of temporal variability of the strength of the lithosphere over past ~5 million years, in this region. Based on the variation of lithospheric strength and subsequent flexural basin extent, I will correlate the effect of the sea floor shape change to changes in Paleo-climatic indicators. This will enable better understanding of the tectonics factors, which influence Paleoclimatic indicators. For my research, I use extensive numerical and mathematical modeling techniques to approximate flexural basin extent and advanced Matlab programming. I have two papers in preparations, one of which deals with a software created in Matlab, which enables a user to fit flexure curves to their own bathymetric/topographic data and gravity data. The other paper is more about the estimates of variation in flexural rigidity / elastic thickness, load position and load magnitudes. Part of this research is continually being presented at GSA and AGU meetings, so keep an eye out for them if you are interested. I am also very much interested in working on earthquake hazard zonation mappings based on tectonic stability of faults in the region and my previous researches were focused in this direction. Finally, I am also interested in making Geoscience accessible. I am a member of IAGD and strive to make every public Geoscience interaction more accessible.
