Get nominated by U.S. Forest Service International Programs

There is no official application process for participation in the Sustainable Tourism Community of Learning and Practice.

Participation is based on individual participants being selected by the U.S. Forest Service International Programs country program staff around the world.  If you are interested in participating in this program and are in communication with U.S. Forest Service International Programs, please let them know of your interest.  You can find out more information about where the U.S. Forest Service International Programs operates by visiting: https://www.fs.usda.gov/about-agency/international-programs/where-we-work

Fill out the confirmed participant form

Once we have a consolidated list of participants from the U.S. Forest Service International Programs, we will get in touch with you to request that you fill out our participant form.  The link to the form will be sent to you in our acceptance email.

The participant form will include the following kinds of information:

Note: This information is for our personal use so that, in the event of your participation in the in-person portion of the program, we are prepared to aid you with any medical assistance necessary.
  6. Personal profile of 8 – 10 lines in length (this will be used for us to better get to know the applicants and will be compiled in a profile document for those chosen to attend the training seminar). General information about your work

  8. A copy of your passport photo and information page (if you have a passport),

We understand that applicants don’t always have all of their documentation together at the same time.  Should it be necessary to submit your supporting documents at a later date, you will be able to email protectedareas@colostate.edu with the required supplementary information.

Begin the Visa process

The first 9-months of the program are virtual.  The in-person U.S. site visit will take place in September 2023.  So, you will have some time to go through the corresponding steps to request a visa.  We will help guide you through this process; however, it is important to note that the participants ultimately hold the responsibility for ensuring that they have their visa on time.  It can take many months to process a visa, especially with long wait times due to COVID-19 backups and short staff in the government, and we have no guarantees that the visa will be provided.  The final decision on who gets a visa is made by the U.S. Consulate in your country.

Be proactive.

Keep in contact with our team  (protectedareas@colostate.edu) during the visa process. Be sure to communicate frequently with us during this stage.

Make the most out of your time in the program and stay in touch

The initial portion program lasts 16-months.  We do our best to make sure the program is meeting expectations, is designed to make us feel like we are part of a community of learning and practice, provides opportunities for us to bring the learning to our day-to-day work, and at the same time, we want to make sure that the program does not overwhelm us.  We understand that this program is an add on to your job and to all of your family and life responsibilities.  Please take advantage of your time in the program to utilize all of the resources available to you.  If you are having difficulty keeping up or participating in some of the sessions, please just let us know.  We will work with you to adapt the program so it works for you.  And remember, the initial 16-month period is just the beginning.  You can continue to stay engaged with the community of learning and practice for as long as you would like.
