After Maurita graduated Cum Laude from CSU in 2015, she completed her Master’s degree from Duke University in Environmental Management with a sustainability focus.  She accepted a job as an Environmental Engineer with Lockheed Martin upon graduating this past April.  Maurita works for Lockheed’s Advanced Development Program in California.  She focuses on pollution prevention, sustainability, community engagement, air quality, and environmental integration in design. The nature of the aerospace industry, as well as the complexity of regulations, make for a diverse and exciting work space for a sustainability professional at Lockheed.

What led you to a natural resources education/career?

My passion for exploring the outdoors fueled my interest in this field. I am an avid backpacker, trail runner, and mountain enthusiast – there is no place I would rather be than on a trail! Connecting my work life to this is key. I wanted a career where each day I could positively contribute to our natural systems, whether that be through conservation of resources, increasing operational efficiency, or designing a more sustainable product.

Can you reflect on your time and experiences at CSU and how it benefited you?

My time at CSU was influential in getting to where I am today. The blend of courses I took – from the natural sciences to systems thinking to the human/environment interface – delivered a comprehensive outlook on environmental challenges. CSU provided the opportunity to take on multiple internships and use the outdoors as a classroom, both of which enhanced my educational experience. Having diverse and passionate peers at CSU was motivating as well, in addition to being nestled in a beautiful location! Without the foundational knowledge in natural resources and sustainability I built at CSU, I would not have been able to understand the complexities of the environmental field or systematically think on how to solve problems. My courses and interactions at CSU set me up to be successful in my Master’s program at Duke University as well, which I completed after graduating.

What advice do you have for current students or recent grads?

I have four pieces of advice for young professionals and students:

1) Embrace challenges – Take on that tough project, try applying your skills to a new industry, and don’t be afraid to make a big move for a job. You never know where it will take you!

2) Don’t forget why you choose a natural resource degree. Use your passion for the environment to drive your success and motivate you to produce exceptional work.

3) Be open to new ideas and perspectives – continuous learning will be beneficial to your personal and career growth.

4) And of course, always make time to have fun and enjoy nature!
