My research examines how changing climate and land use will affect nutrient cycling and soil microbial dynamics. Predictin g the ecosystem consequences of changes in temperature and rainfall patterns is difficult because there are many interacting factors. Changes in rainfall and temperature affect the way nitrogen and carbon cycle through ecosystems, influencing other processes like plant production, soil fertility, and emission of gases from the soil. Environmental changes also affect how microbial communities, which control carbon and nitrogen transformations in the soil, carryout functions. These consequences of changes in temperature and precipitation can result in feedback loops that make it more difficult to predict trajectories of climate change and the possible outcomes. See more specifics about my research here, or here, in less scientific language.
