Designed a replicate sampler for surface nearshore and shallow water collections of ichthyoplankton and macroinvertebrate drift. Evaluated capture and retention efficiency of light-traps. Reviewed and summarized information on the adverse impacts of electrofishing on fish (adults as well as embryos, larvae and juveniles). Participated in a pumped-storage entrainment study and aquatic surveys for both steam and hydro-electric power stations. Participated in field surveys, monitoring programs, and field research involving endangered species.
Conceived and helped plan and establish the Early Life History Section of the American Fisheries Society (AFS); served as its first president. Served as Associate Editor with respect to the larval fish papers for Transactions of the American Fisheries Society.
Conceived and helped plan, establish, and operate the only nationally oriented center for the study and identification of North America's freshwater fish larvae -- the Larval Fish Laboratory at Colorado State University.
Taught short courses on identification of fish larvae in the upper Mississippi River and, with others, in the upper Colorado River System. Helped organize and co-instructed short courses on ecology and sampling of larval fish in freshwaters and on ageing, marking, and clearing and staining young fish. Contributed to organization of a university course on fish reproduction and early life history. Occasional guest lecture in other fishery courses (e.g., Fishery Biology Techniques). Presented a workshop on sample processing and taxonomic techniques for fish larvae and a display and discussion of major early-life-history literature at the 13th annual Larval Fish Conference in Merida (Yucatan), Mexico.
