Colorado State University Names Mike Lester New State Forester
March 22, 2013 - Colorado State University today named Mike Lester the new state forester and director of the Colorado State Forest Service. As state forester, Lester will lead the CSFS to provide for the protection of Colorado’s forest resources; ensure forestry education, outreach and technical assistance to private landowners; and carry out the duties of the Division of Forestry within the Colorado Department of Natural Resources.

The CSFS is a service and outreach agency of Colorado State University, and provides landowners with technical forestry assistance and outreach via 17 district offices located throughout Colorado. Read More . . . 
Watershed Science Senior Mikaela Cherry Presents Undergraduate Research at International ASLO Conference
Feb. 25, 2013 - Colorado State University senior Mikaela Cherry was selected from hundreds of students across the nation to present her undergraduate research at the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) Conference in New Orleans this month. Cherry presented her research project, “The concentration and composition of dissolved organic matter in Lake Michigan,” which she worked on as a participant in the prestigious National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduate Students Program (REU). Cherry is a watershed science major at CSU’s Warner College of Natural Resources, and competed against thousands of students from across the nation to participate in the ocean science REU program. She was selected to participate in the 10-week program at the University of Wisconsin’s School of Freshwater Sciences during the summer of 2012. Read More . . . 
CSU Research Sheds New Light on Wolves' Impact on Ecosystems in Yellowstone
Feb. 6, 2013 -  New research by Colorado State University finds that the removal of wolves from Yellowstone National Park caused complex changes in ecological processes that cannot be simply reversed by wolf reintroduction alone. The research findings are presented in a new paper, “Stream hydrology limits recovery of riparian ecosystems after wolf reintroduction,” which is published inProceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences and concludes that the effects of apex predator removal are unpredictable and are not symmetrical with the effects of predator reintroduction. Warner College Fall 2012 Outstanding Graduates Overcome Challenges and Reach Graduation Goals
Dec. 10, 2012 - Graduate Turns Dream into Reality after Suffering Severe Head Trauma
Jennifer Webster is graduating from the Warner College of Natural Resources after an eight-year challenge of teaching herself to learn after suffering a traumatic brain injury and enduring personal struggles with ADHD, suicide and death in her family. With assistance from CSU’s Resources for Disabled Students, family and friends, she is earning a degree in Natural Resource Recreation and Tourism with a concentration in environmental communication. She received the Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots internship, and is headed to a six-month internship in Tanzania to teach local children about wildlife.

Graduate Uses GI Bill to Pursue Life-long Dream in Natural Resources
While staring at the stars one night on a 45-day mission in the mountains of Afghanistan, Jonathan Wardell had an epiphany. When he returned home, he was going to change careers and pursue his life-long passion for nature with a career in natural resources and fishery biology. As a non-traditional student, Wardell has taken every opportunity to advance his education and experience, including working as a field technician on the Yampa River studying invasive fish species and as a research assistant at CSU’s Foothills Fishery Lab studying native fish passage. He is also an active member of several student organizations including the CSU Bass Team, Xi Sigma Pi natural resource honor society and American Fisheries Society student chapter - where he volunteered 20 hours a month as aquarium curator and earned the 2012 Outstanding Student Member Award.

Oct. 24, 2012 - The Ecological Society of America recently unveiled a new program to honor members who have made outstanding contributions in the advancement or application of ecological science in academics, government, non-profit organizations or the broader society. Seven faculty and alumni from the Natural Resource Ecology Lab and the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University were selected as part of the newly established ESA Fellows program. With more than 800 trees planted, $2,000 raised in firewood fundraising and a long list of outreach activities each semester, Colorado State University’s Society of American Foresters Alpha Student Chapter is earning national recognition in natural resource management and forestry excellence. The Society of American Foresters awarded CSU’s SAF Alpha Student Chapter with the second place Outstanding Student Chapter Award for 2011-2012, and will formally present the national award to the student organization at the SAF National Convention in Spokane, Wash. this month. North Central Climate Science Center Hosts Ribbon Cutting For New CSU Research Facility

Climate change has become one of the most important and contentiously debated global issues facing society today, and the North Central Climate Science Center (NC CSC) is hosting a ribbon-cutting event and reception to mark the construction and launch of its new facility at Colorado State University’s Natural and Environmental Sciences Building on Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 2-4 p.m. As a hub of climate science research and innovation, CSU was selected as the base for one of eight U.S. Department of the Interior Climate Science Centers established across the nation. CSU Researchers Lead Wildfire Impact Study to Assess High Park Fire's Effects and Support Recovery

In response to one of the worst wildfires in Colorado history, scientists from the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University are leading a first of its kind, large-scale wildfire impact study on the High Park Fire in partnership with Colorado’s newest research facility, the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON). The study will provide critical data to the communities still grappling with how to respond to major water quality, erosion and ecosystem restoration issues in an area spanning more than 136 square miles.
Senior Botanist at WCNR's Colorado Natural Heritage Program Receives Recovery Champion Award

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has awarded the Colorado Rare Plant Conservation Initiative with the 2012 Recovery Champion Award for its achievements in advancing the recovery of endangered and threatened plant species. Susan Spackman Panjabi, senior botanist at Colorado State University’s Colorado Natural Heritage Program, a unit of the Warner College of Natural Resources, was recognized for her leadership and contributions to the Colorado Rare Plant Conservation Initiative along with partners from The Nature Conservancy, Colorado Natural Areas Program and Denver Botanic Gardens.
 
 Robin Reid Awarded Ecological Society of America 2012 Sustainability Science Award

Colorado State University scientist Robin Reid and her co-authors will be awarded the prestigious 2012 ESA Sustainability Science Award for their collaborative paper, “Evolution of models to support community and policy action with science: Balancing pastoral livelihoods and wildlife conservation in savannas of East Africa.” Reid is the director of the Center for Collaborative Conservation, an initiative of Colorado State University’s Warner College of Natural Resources, and is also a Warner College alumna, professor and senior research scientist whose research is recognized around the world and was featured on 60 Minutes.
Colorado Natural Heritage Program Presents New Report of Critical Biological Resources in Jefferson County

For the second time in 20 years, the county commissioned the Colorado Natural Heritage Program, a unit of Colorado State University’s Warner College of Natural Resources, to survey critical biological resources in the area. The first survey was completed in 1993, and since then, 65 percent of the areas identified have been conserved through Jefferson County Open Space.
Colorado State University Researching High Park Fire's Effect on Mercury Levels

Researchers from the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology at Colorado State University’s Warner College of Natural Resources are studying the High Park Fire’s effect on mercury levels in water and potential increases of mercury in the food chain. The two-year study began in June, and will analyze mercury level data from rainwater, air, and water and fish samples from Horsetooth Reservoir in Fort Collins.
CSU Sweeps 2012 CESU National Awards for Natural Resource Stewardship Contributions

Colorado State University’s Public Lands History Center and Warner College of Natural Resources Associate Dean Peter Newman have been selected as winners of the Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit Network 2012 National Awards for their contributions to natural resource stewardship. The organization, which includes more than 300 member organizations, gives only two national awards each year. Newman, who has been part of the Warner College faculty since 2002, was honored for his work in the National Park Service Natural Sounds Program, which works to mitigate noise pollution in national parks.
