Welcome to the Small Diameter Harvesting Demonstration Home Page.

The Small Scale Harvesting Demonstration, held at Genesee Mountain Community, was a great success.  Over 100 people participated in the event.

Objectives:

o To provide possible solutions to those interested in addressing the hazardous fuel build up along the Front Range
o To provide a location where consultants, agency representatives and home owners can meet and discuss the issue
o To provide media coverage to inform the public of issues and possible solutions for situation
o To collect information of the effectiveness of the equipment that will be demonstrated
Background:
Forest restoration projects deal with a variety of issues pertaining to water quality, wildlife habitat, forest health and, in particular, wildfire mitigation.  Removal or thinning of trees in overly dense forests can help reduce fuel loads and the risk of catastrophic, high intensity wildfire.  Forest thinning projects can be expensive especially in the Front Range wildland-urban interface where the bulk of the removals involve small diameter trees that have low wood product value and high removal costs.  These high costs have been a deterrent to accomplishing widespread restoration efforts.  If more cost effective harvesting systems were available, possibly more area could be treated to meet forest restoration objectives.  The demonstration has been designed to evaluate innovative equipment in the small scale harvesting arena.
