Future FRWS Students

Future Students

Would you like to study natural resources at one of the highest ranked programs in the country?  Are you interested in a career that will help restore our natural resources to a healthier condition for future generations?  Would you like the opportunity to study and live in remote settings - places you've always dreamed of visiting, let alone working in?  If so, consider majors in forestry, natural resources management, rangeland ecology, or watershed science.

Class in the snow

Colorado State University provides a unique setting for the study of forest, rangeland, and watershed stewardship.  The university is situated within easy access of five ecosystem types: alpine, subalpine, montane, foothills and shortgrass steppe.  These sites provide students a wide variety of experiential learning opportunities.

Field activities at the undergraduate level include: day-long field trips to nearby forests and grasslands; a four week natural resources ecology and measurements field experience at the Pingree Park Campus; a week long watershed practicum; and a week long forestry field measurements course.  Students learn from world renowned research scientists in the classroom, laboratory, and field about diverse topics such as:

  • Ecology
  • Conservation biology
  • Wildland restoration
  • Fire science
  • Forest management
  • Range management
  • Hydrology

  • Riparian management

  • Environmental policy

  • Environmental pollution

  • Hazardous waste mitigation

  • Computer applications in natural resources management

Graduate Studies

The application process differs slightly depending on the type of degree you are interested in pursuing. While our MS and PhD programs accept new students in both the fall and spring semesters, the professional Master's of Natural Resources Stewardship (MNRS) program only accepts new students in the fall semester.
