Assistant Collections Manager - Geology

Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Denver, CO

Job Summary

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science seeks an Assistant Collections Manager (ACM) in the Integrative Collections Branch to support the Earth Sciences’ Geology collections (Minerals, Rocks, Meteorites, and Micromounts). Specifically, this is a rare opportunity to be part of the museum’s efforts to create a new mineral and gem exhibit hall, which will include a closure and deconstruction of our existing mineral and gem exhibit. The ACM will support efforts to deinstall, clean, repair, rehouse, and track physical location (via barcoding) of all geological specimens being removed from the exhibit.  In addition, the removed specimens will require updating their records in the database (KE Emu).  The ACM will be expected to assist in the work of identifying the geological specimens going into the new exhibit or the museum collections storage facility, which will require archives research, database work, photography, other imaging, and barcoding. In addition to the research on specimen acquisition and provenance accuracy, research will be required to define or confirm best storage conditions and cleaning criteria.

This position will have a heavy focus on the Mineral collection, but duties will include work on the other Earth Science collections (rocks, meteorites, and fossils) that are directly impacted by the overall progression of this exhibit project. Impacts to existing collections will likely include: a need for reorganizing subsets of the Geology collections, moving existing collections, and processing incoming collections to accommodate deinstalled specimens, including data entry, specimen record updates, and maintenance of all associated digital data.

This position is a three year term.  This position will work closely with the Earth Sciences Collections Manager(s), the Curator of Geology, Exhibits team, Gem & Mineral Exhibit Team.

As part of an outwardly focused and collaborative museum team, this position will also support other outreach, service, and research activities on an as-needed basis. The DMNS is especially interested in candidates whose background and experience have prepared them to contribute to our commitments to co-create a museum-wide DEAI strategy, and to find ways for culturally diverse communities to engage with the Museum in meaningful ways.
