Advisor: Dr. Bill Andelt

Project Title: Distribution of American Marten in relation to snowcover on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula.

Research Abstract: The American marten (Martes americana) was designated in 1988 by the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge as one of a small number of furbearing species requiring special conservation attention on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula. Marten appear to be rare on the Refuge and some data indicate that populations are decreasing, especially on the western side of the Kenai Mountains potentially as a result of global climate change. However, estimates of present and historic populations and trends are largely unavailable.

The goals of this project are to 1) to estimate longterm marten population distribution trends, 2) examine snowcover as a potential driver of marten distribution in the context global climate warming. 3) estimate daily metabolic rates and examine the thermodynamic effects of snowcover as physiological contraint for marten.

The results of these investigations will be used to make recommendations for the future management of marten on the Kenai including a proposed pilot program to reintroduce marten to areas of suitable habitat on the western side of the peninsula where they currently do not exist.

I will be in the field from January 07 through April 08 radio-tracking marten and will be seeking tracking help during the upcoming winters. Please contact me if interested.
