Channel Morphology of Unglaciated Unconfined Channels
(Information Compiled by A. Bryden)
Unconfined channels in unglaciated valleys are largely disconnected from hillslope processes. Sediment supply exceeds the transport capacity of channel-forming flows, resulting in alluvial bedforms. This morphology is characterized by a low-gradient meandering alluvial channel and a migrating planform.
In an unconfined unglaciated valley, channel morphology is typically pool-riffle. The channel may also develop step-pool sequences in response to organization of large clasts and/or woody debris.
