Channel Morphology of Unglaciated Partially Confined Channels
(Information Compiled by A. Bryden)
Confined channels in unglaciated valleys are partially disconnected from hillslope processes. Morphology is characterized by moderate to steep gradient alluvial channels confined on at least one bank by bedrock or the valley wall. Channel confinement by the valley wall exposes the channel to hillslope processes such as debris flows and landslides. Gradient and transport capacity of these channels can vary, leading to a range of possible channel morphologies.
The channel morphology of a partially confined unglaciated valley can vary over short distances. Step-pool morphologies are most common, although pool-riffle, cascade, and even bedrock sections can also be present.
