South Platte Headwaters Drainage Basin

The area that we designate the South Platte headwaters includes the Middle and South Forks of the South Platte and Tarryall Creek. The Middle and South Forks drain about 850 km2 and Tarryall drains about 1250 km2. All of the streams head near the Continental Divide and flow down through South Park. Much of this area was the site of 19th- and 20th-century placer mining and placer tailings remain quite visible today in South Park.
