Human Dimensions of Natural Resources

pcmip_150

Our department recently added Global Tourism to the undergraduate program which allows students to take course work in business, tourism and natural resources.

Our programs facilitate cross-cultural experience by requiring foreign language, study at a university abroad, and an international internship.

Biodiversity and Sustainable Forestry

Assessment of Public Knowledge, Values and Attitudes toward Biodiversity and Sustainable Forestry

394-2.jpg Members of the Human Dimensions of Natural Resources Department at Colorado State University conducted this project with funding from the National Commission on Science for Sustainable Forestry (NCSSF WebsiteNCSSF Website). The NCSSF is currently carrying out a five year program aimed at advancing the sciences of sustainable forestry and biodiversity conservation. This portion of the program was developed because of the NCSSF's concern that they did not have sufficient information concerning the American public's view of biodiversity as compared to other forest benefits such as water quality, carbon sequestration, and recreation.

To explore these issues, we first conducted a review of the available literature on human dimensions of biodiversity and related topics, such as forest values and management, wildlife and their management, and fire and its management. Second, we convened an external advisory committee of managers and scientists to discuss the challenges of achieving biodiversity objectives within a management framework. Third, in response to the NCSSF's goal of providing practical information to managers, practitioners, and policymakers, we developed a PowerPoint presentation which summarizes the findings of our research and presents critical human dimensions considerations which must be taken into account when creating and presenting biodiversity objectives.
