Introduction
The Cache La Poudre Basin Project, managed by the Colorado Water Resources and Power Development Authority and the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District, plans to provide for the efficient and environmentally sound development of water and hydroelectric power for northern Colorado. With the projected increase in human population over the next decades, the District has decided to explore potential sites for the location of the new reservoir.
These exercises are designed to
help high school students develop an appreciation of spatial information
from a local real world situation using GIS data layers representing the
geology, hydrology, wildlife biology, major transportation, and human settlement
patterns of northern Colorado to select the most suitable site for
a proposed water reservoir, and to examine potential impacts of the reservoir.
It will also provide links to other sources of information to reinforce
relevant applications of basic physics, chemistry and earth science.
